Tribute: Abderrahmane Sissako

One of the basic aims of the festival is to build an intercultural bridge of communication between the local cinema of neighbouring countries and continents. In this context, this year the festival will present three films by a contemporary African director, Abderrahmane Sissako. Sissako was born in 1961 in the city of Kiffa in Mauritania, but was raised in Mali, his father’s birthplace. He studied cinema in the well- known school VGIK in Moscow from 1983 to 1989, and later moved to Paris from where his career as a director began to acquire international appeal. Through his multi-dimensional philosophical perspective which combines autobiographical elements, allegory and drama, he always focuses his attention on identity, expatriation issues and the cultural and economic impact that colonialism has had in the modern history of Africa. The festival will screen three of his most important films:

Life on earth (1998)
Waiting for happiness (2002)
Bamako Convention (2006)
