Eleven-year-old Sophie and her father, Calum, vacation at a Turkish beach resort in the late 1990s. They swim, play pool, and enjoy each other’s company; they are partners in crime. Calum is the best version of himself when he is with Sophie. Sophie feels like anything is possible when Calum is around. As they enjoy their time together, layers of melancholy and mystery ripple through Calum’s behavior. Twenty years later, the memories take on new meaning as Sophie tries to reconcile the father she knew with the man she didn’t.

Gentle and timid Haider lives with his wife, Mumtaz, his father, and his elder brother’s family in Lahore, Pakistan. Following a long spell of unemployment, Haider finally lands a job at a Bollywood-style burlesque, telling his family he is a theatre manager, when in reality, he is a backup dancer. The unusual position shakes up the steadfast traditional dynamics of his household and enables Haider to break out of his shell. As he acclimates to the new job, Haider becomes infatuated with the strong-willed trans woman Biba who runs the show—an unforeseen partnership that opens his eyes and ultimately his worldview, in ways both unexpected and intimate.
