Η Μαρίνα μεγαλώνει με τον αρχιτέκτονα πατέρα της σε μια μικρή παραθαλάσσια πόλη. Οι άνθρωποι την απωθούν. Τους παρατηρεί εξ αποστάσεως, μέσα από τη μουσική των Suicide, τα ντοκιμαντέρ για τη ζωή των θηλαστικών του Sir David Attenborough και τα μαθήματα σεξουαλικής αγωγής που της παραδίδει η μοναδική της φίλη, Μπέλα. Ένας ξένος φτάνει στην πόλη και ξυπνά τη σεξουαλικότητά της, ενώ ο πατέρας της προετοιμάζει τελετουργικά την αναχώρησή του από τον 20ό αιώνα, τον οποίο θεωρεί υπερτιμημένο. Ανάμεσα σε δύο άντρες και την Μπέλα, η Μαρίνα εξερευνά το θαυμαστό μυστήριο του ανθρώπινου είδους. Η ταινία καταπιάνεται με το αφηρημένο και το θεατρικό με χορογραφημένα ιντερλούδια, όμως παρέχει συνάμα ένα σημαντικό, συναισθηματικό σημείο πρόσβασης στον δυνατό δεσμό ανάμεσα σε πατέρα και κόρη. Μια αντισυμβατική ταινία ενηλικίωσης, το Attenberg  είναι η ιστορία ενός κοριτσιού-γυναίκας, που συμφιλιώνεται με το σεξ και το θάνατο ως φυσικές πτυχές της ζωής.

Marina, 23, is growing up with her architect father in a prototype factory town by the sea. Finding people strange and repellent, she keeps her distance. Instead she chooses to observe it through the songs of Suicide, the mammal documentaries of Sir David Attenborough, and the sexual-­education lessons she receives from her only friend, Bella. A stranger comes to town and awakens her sexuality. Her father meanwhile ritualistically prepares for his exit from the 20th century, which he considers to be “overrated.” Caught between the two men and Bella, Marina investigates the wondrous mystery of the human species. The film embraces the abstract and theatrical in choreographed interludes, but provides an essential emotional point of access in the profound father-daughter bond. An unconventional coming-of-age film, Attenberg is the story of a girl-woman who comes to terms with sex and death as natural parts of life.
