Festival beginnings with music, dance and a performance

The 17th Cyprus Film Days International Festival marks its opening this Friday at 8p.m. with a music and dance performance, directed by the well-known Cypriot actor and theatre director, Panayiotis Larcou. The ten-minute performance, with original music composed by Antonis Antoniou, presents elements from the history of cinema in a particularly humorous way, on the Rialto Theatre stage. Performers: Rebecca Katsaris and Panayiotis Tofi.

The screenings kick off with Smuggling Hendrix

A great number of distinguished guests and international directors, along with local filmmakers are expected to attend the opening, while the international jury, chaired by the famous German director Udo Kier, will honour the festival with their presence. The screenings kick off with the awarded Cypriot feature film Smuggling Hendrix, by Marios Piperides, which has already travelled widely to international festivals.

Film Synopsis:
Yiannis’ plans to leave Cyprus are put on hold when his dog, Jimi, runs away and crosses the UN buffer zone that divides the areas controlled by the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish occupied areas. Since animal exchange between the two “sides” is prohibited, Yiannis reluctantly joins forces with a cast of unexpected characters to smuggle him back. The film is also competing in the National Competition section.

Party on with a signature cocktail!

The Festival opening party, which is to take place in the open air at Heroes Square, will follow the screening. This year, the Festival also launches its signature cocktail. Eyes on the screen for nine days and nights of independent cinema!
